Toy hauler pre-purchase inspection Rockwall TX

What to Expect

Garage, Ramp, Fuel — Plus Everything Else

Toy haulers are travel trailers or fifth wheels with a rear ramp door and a garage built for hauling motorcycles, ATVs, side-by-sides, or anything else with wheels. Most have a fuel station, an onboard generator, and reinforced tie-down anchors in the garage floor. Everything that makes a toy hauler great also adds inspection points a regular trailer doesn't have.

Scott's toy hauler inspection covers everything in a travel trailer or fifth wheel inspection — chassis, roof, slides, electrical, plumbing — plus the ramp door system, the fuel station integrity, the generator, and the garage-to-living-area separation that keeps fumes where they belong.

After the inspection you receive a detailed written report with photos delivered the same day.

Inspection Coverage

What We Inspect on a Toy Hauler

Ramp Door & Hinges

Ramp door operation, hinges, weather seals, latching mechanism, ramp-to-patio conversion if equipped, and ramp-door cable or strut condition.

Fuel Station

Fuel tank integrity, fuel pump, hose and nozzle, fuel-vapor isolation from the living area, and ventilation.

Onboard Generator

Hour meter, fuel, oil, exhaust, slide-tray, and a load test. Most toy hauler generators are placed near the garage and exhaust routing is critical.

Garage Floor & Tie-Downs

Garage flooring (vinyl, rubber, or treated wood), tie-down anchor condition, and any garage-to-bunk conversion mechanism.

Living-Area Separation

The wall and door between garage and living area — seals, door function, and any signs of fuel-vapor or exhaust transfer.

Chassis & Hitch (or Pin)

Travel trailer hitch system or fifth wheel king pin and pin box — depending on the toy hauler type. Tongue/pin weight verification.

Roof & Slides

Full roof walk, every seal and penetration. Slide-outs operated and inspected.

Coach Systems

12V/120V electrical, propane (regulator, detector, distribution), fresh/gray/black tanks and valves (often larger to support garage water needs), water heater, AC and furnace.

Appliances & Interior

Refrigerator, microwave, range, garage AC unit if equipped, all interior surfaces, and the convertible garage furniture.

Common Questions

Toy Hauler — Frequently Asked Questions

What is a toy hauler and what can I use it for?
A toy hauler is a fifth wheel or travel trailer with an enclosed cargo area in the rear, accessed through a ramp door that folds down. Originally designed to haul ATVs, motorcycles, and side-by-sides, the garage space is actually quite flexible. Many owners use it as a second bedroom with bunks, a home office, a workspace, or an extended outdoor living area when the ramp is lowered and the railings are set up. The sliding glass door and railed ramp create a patio space that is a unique feature of the toy hauler design.
Is a toy hauler fifth wheel better than a toy hauler travel trailer?
For hauling heavier toys or equipment, fifth wheel toy haulers are generally preferred because the fifth wheel connection distributes weight more effectively and allows for higher tow ratings. The pin connection over the rear axle keeps the heavy cargo area closer to the tow vehicle, improving stability. Travel trailer toy haulers are a viable option for lighter loads and work well with appropriately rated trucks, but for maximum weight capacity and towing stability, the fifth wheel platform is the stronger choice.
What are the weight distribution concerns when loading a toy hauler?
The cargo area in a toy hauler is located behind the rear axle. Weight loaded into that area creates a lever effect — the heavier the load behind the axle, the more the rear of the trailer is pushed down and the tongue or pin is lifted. This unloads weight from the front of the tow vehicle, reduces steering control, and can cause the trailer to sway dangerously. It is critical to stay within the manufacturer's garage weight rating and to understand how your loaded weight affects pin weight or tongue weight before you drive.
Can the cargo area be used as living space?
Yes, and many owners design their toy hauler use around that flexibility. When the ramp is raised and closed, the garage area can function as a second bedroom, a bunk room for kids, a home office, a gym, or a workshop. When the ramp is lowered and the safety rails are set up, it becomes an outdoor deck or patio. Some models even include a murphy bed or bunk system that folds out of the garage wall. The flexible rear space is one of the most practical features of the toy hauler design.
